Graduate Students


We are looking for students who are interested in pursuing their PhD in the field of computer systems to join the VISA laboratory. FIU is a rapidly growing research-intensive university and one of the largest public schools at US. It is located at the beautiful, exciting, metropolitan city of Miami, Florida. The School of Computing and Information Sciences (SCIS) is one of the best units at FIU and has a very high quality graduate program. The external funding level at SCIS is also ranked top of all the computer science programs in U.S.

PhD Scholarship for US Citizen


We are looking for Computer Science PhD students to pursue research in areas of high interest to the Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Division. Topic areas include but are not limited to: cyber security, data fusion, data mining, on-demand/cloud computing, situational awareness, and visualization. Our project collaborates with partners like the Purdue University/DHS (Department of Homeland Security) Science and Technology Center of Excellence partner Visual Analytics for Command, Control, and Interoperability Environments (VACCINE) and Miami-Dade County Emergency Management to provide researcher with real world challenges relevant to DHS science and technology mission and represent problems of meaningful societal concern.

Highly competitive scholarship will be provided. The awardees will also benefit from job placement opportunities from our partner network and particularly be assisted on employment at a DHS-approved scientific or engineering venue.

Undergraduate Students


We are looking for undergraduate students who are interested in computer systems to join our research at the VISA laboratory. Our current projects include research on high-performance computing and cloud computing systems.

The benefits for the students include: 1) Training in systems programming and experimentation (C, Linux, etc.); 2) Training in research skills (technical reading, writing, and presentations); 3) Opportunity to work with advanced computer systems (clusters, clouds); 4) Paid on a hourly basis ($10 or higher depending on qualifications).

The requirements for the students include: 1) Ability to work at least 1p hours per week in spring or fall and 20 hours per week in summer; 2) An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher; 3) A grade of B or higher in Data Structures and Programming courses; 4) US citizen or permanent resident.
